Six unbroken lines: the Creative, the force of heaven itself. You may be standing at the very start of something, with a clear upward drive in you — the urge to initiate, to make things move. This hexagram is about active power: effort that begins with you and that you carry, like a seed pushing up through soil. Its strength is real, but it works best paired with timing. The tradition pictures the energy as a dragon passing through six stages, from hidden to soaring, each with its own measure. Raw force spent all at once tends to overreach; strength that lasts is strength applied steadily and with restraint. The tone now is one of bold beginning and leadership. The question is not whether you are capable, but whether you are willing to take responsibility for setting the direction — and to know when to press and when to hold.

The Six Lines

1. First line

   The lowest line is a dragon still hidden in the deep. The moment has not arrived; the conditions are not yet in place. This is not failure but gathering. Rather than rushing to be seen, let the roots grow strong and unseen. Holding still now is what makes a graceful move possible later.

2. Second line

   The dragon has surfaced and appears in the field. You are beginning to be noticed, and you meet someone who can help you rise. This is a time to show what you have learned in an honest way, and to draw near to people worth learning from. No need to make noise; let steady competence speak.

3. Third line

   Active through the day, still watchful at nightfall. You have reached a turning point where responsibility grows heavier and the pressure with it. This line is about self-discipline: not slackening when busy, not getting carried away when things go well. Hold that carefulness, and even a tight situation can be walked through safely.

4. Fourth line

   Poised above the depths, the dragon hesitates over whether to leap. Ahead lies both opportunity and risk, and either advancing or waiting can be justified. This is a moment for careful testing: no need to force flight, and no need to doubt your own strength. Weigh it clearly, and when the time to leap comes, leap.

5. Fifth line

   The dragon flies in the heavens, in its most expansive place. Your ability and the timing now match, and a larger stage suits you — as does joining with people who can walk beside you. When strength reaches this height, remember to turn it toward something wider than proving yourself.

6. Top line

   The dragon flies too high and finds cause for regret. This line warns of going past the point of enough: when momentum peaks, it is easy to overlook the way back and the feelings of others. Knowing when to withdraw takes more wisdom than climbing further. Restraint at the height is the real mastery.

Reading the Change

All six lines of the Creative are yang — pure capacity for action. When a line changes, that drive loosens or turns at one particular stage. A change in the first line points back to timing still ripening; a change in the top line asks you to notice overreach. See which stage your changing line falls in, and you know whether this creative force should be reined in or released right now. The resulting hexagram sketches the new situation it moves into.
