The Judgment

The Six Lines
First line
Modesty layered upon modesty is the bearing of this line. One who sets themselves this low can cross even a hard, great river in safety. Second line
Modesty comes out of its own accord, until even your words and manner carry that unassuming sincerity. This line is about humility from the inside out: not a courtesy put on for show, but a calm that comes straight from the heart, which others naturally sense. Hold to this genuineness, and the road runs steady.
Third line
To have merit and stay humble, quietly carrying the work through to the end, is the most respected form of modesty. This line is about toiling without boasting: giving much, yet claiming no credit and making no display. Precisely because you do not grab the credit, others follow you with a willing heart. Solid effort joined with humility brings things to a full completion.
Fourth line
Keeping to modesty in every move, fitting at every turn, nothing is unfavorable. This line is about putting humility into action: not only humble in heart, but leaving room in the very manner of your doing, knowing how to give way. This sense of measure makes you especially welcome in any shared effort.
Fifth line
Not boasting of wealth to outdo the neighbor, yet able to act decisively when firmness is due. This line reminds you that modesty is not weakness. True humility keeps a low profile day to day, but still has the nerve to bring out its strength when a problem must be faced. Gentleness and decisiveness can live side by side.
Top line
Modesty makes itself heard, and now is a time to put your own proper affairs in order, setting straight the order that should be set. This line is about being humble yet able to govern: yielding outward, while still clearly shouldering and firmly ordering the range of your own responsibility. Being gentle does not stop you from keeping your own house in order.

Modesty is about inwardness, balance, and advancing by yielding; from the first line to the top, it moves through humility upon humility, sincerity from within, toiling without boasting, and being humble yet able to govern.
