The Judgment
At the very bottom of a whole field of yielding lines, a single firm line quietly comes back — thunder held within the earth, the light beginning its way home: this is Return. It is about the turning point, coming back, and renewal, like the moment of the winter solstice, when the daylight is still short yet already lengthening by the day. The deepest trough has passed, and a faint but real quickening is stirring. The tone of this hexagram is a gentle new beginning: no need to rush into grand action, for the strength just returned is tender still and needs to be sheltered and fed. Return also often points to a turn back onto the right path — when you sense you have strayed or lost your way and are willing to head back, that willingness is itself a good start. Move with this returning current now, take it slowly, and do not force the sprout to grow. That thing in your heart you want to begin again — has it not already put out a quiet shoot?
The Six Lines
First line
You turn back before going far, having made no mistake that needs deep regret — this is the finest kind of return. This line is about turning back early: notice you have strayed and correct it at once, at the smallest and cleanest cost. It reminds you that turning back is no failure — the sooner you sense it and the quicker you adjust, the shorter the road home.
Second line
A quiet and lovely return; this is a smooth line. It is about coming back with a willing heart: you are not turning back under compulsion but agree with the direction from within. To draw toward good people and good things, to walk back onto the right path gladly — such a return is grounded and glad, and goes well of itself.
Third line
Leaving and coming back again and again, the process carries some repeated strain and risk, yet in the end no great fault. This line is about an unsteady return: you may resolve and waver, resolve and waver. It reminds you that though the back-and-forth is wearing, as long as each time you are willing to return to the right path, that refusal to give up is itself worth crediting.
Fourth line
Walking in the midst of the crowd, you are nonetheless able to choose, alone, to return to the right path. This line is about a clear-sightedness that does not follow the herd: those around you may not be heading the right way, yet you turn back on your own judgment. Such solitary walking takes steadiness, but it is a rare quality — loyalty to what you know is right is worth more than moving along with the many.
Fifth line
You return with a deep and solid heart, and so leave no regret behind. This line is about a mature, steady return: by now your turning back is no longer hesitant or repeated but comes from a settled self-reflection and sense of responsibility. Treat yourself and others with decency, fix on your direction and walk it firmly, and regret does not follow.
Top line
Missing the moment to turn back, straying farther and farther in a lost state, one meets hardship and setbacks. This line is where the whole hexagram most calls for waking up: it does not rule you out, but warns the other way — return has its right moment, and to keep missing the very point where you should turn back is the true loss. To be willing to come to your senses is never too late.
Reading the Change
Return is about the turning point and coming back; from the first line to the top, it runs through turning back early, coming home gladly, persisting through wavering, keeping to the right path alone, a deep and regret-free return, and the warning not to miss the moment to turn back. When a line changes, the chance of where and when to return turns at one particular stage. A change low down usually asks you to seize the freshly stirring life and correct course early; a change up top speaks to not missing the point where you should turn back. Read where the changing line falls, then the resulting hexagram, and you know which way this returning force is growing. As the one light returns, the deepest trough is already behind you.
