The Judgment
The sun climbs above the horizon, its light spreading inch by inch across the earth — Progress is about advancing, rising, and the moment of being seen and drawn upon. The energy here is like the light of early morning, bright and ascending, marking a time of rising with the current and slowly winning recognition. Progress is no windfall out of nowhere; it comes when your character and effort have built up enough to be noticed and valued on their own. The tone here is to rise openly and honorably: keep your sincerity and uprightness as you advance, without grasping for quick gain or flattering your way up, so that others are willing to place opportunity in your hands. And remember, on the road upward, those who go far are the ones who have both the ability and the sense of measure to hold. The light is on you now — what do you mean to make of being seen?
The Six Lines
First line
You want to move forward, but you are pushed back; here, holding to what is right is fortunate. Even if trust does not come at once, stay broad and unruffled rather than anxious, and there is no blame. This line is about being blocked at the start, before your advance is seen. Do not let one rebuff turn into self-doubt — keep your sincerity steady, and the moment will turn.
Second line
You move forward carrying sorrow in your heart, yet holding to what is right is still fortunate, and a deep blessing comes to you from an elder or one who went before. This line is about a heaviness within progress: the road is right, but the mood is low. Do not let a passing worry block the way — keep to the straight path, and unexpected help will catch you.
Third line
All are in accord with you and willing to follow, and the earlier vexation melts away. This line is about the ease that comes once you have won the trust of others: your advance is no longer a lone campaign but a shared move in one direction. Such goodwill is hard-won, built on sincerity gathered beforehand; treasure it, and do not fail those who chose to believe in you.
Fourth line
You press forward like a greedy rat, grasping at everything yet mastering nothing, and to continue this way is dangerous. This line is about the hidden risk of over-reaching, of drive without an upright heart. On the road upward, do not let greed pull you off course; grab too much, take up too much, and your footing gives way. Rein in the wanting, and even a slower pace stands firmer.
Fifth line
The vexation is gone; do not take a moment's loss or gain to heart, and to go forward is fortunate. This is a fine place in Progress, about the openness that follows letting go of calculation. By now you stand in a place of real trust, and rather than counting every inch of ground, you can set your sight on the larger whole. Widen the heart and the road widens too.
Top line
You advance to the very end, all your edge showing in the horns, and that sharpness is fit only to set your own house in order. This line is about measure once you have risen to the top, where too much hardness snaps. At the height, turn that outward thrust into inward reflection and repair; govern your own ground first, and the edge will not wound you.
Reading the Change
Progress is about advancing and rising; from the first line to the top it runs from being blocked at the start and holding right amid sorrow, through winning the accord of others and guarding against over-reaching, to letting go of loss and gain and reining in one's edge. It speaks of the timing of moving up, and of how to move steadily and honestly. When a line changes, the judgment of how far to advance and what to hold turns at one particular stage. A change low down usually warns you not to let a rebuff or a worry unsettle your sincerity; a change up top speaks to setting down calculation and turning outward sharpness into inward repair. Read where the changing line falls, then the resulting hexagram, and you know which way this rise is unfolding. To rise in the light is to rise far.
